Google just gave free AI subscriptions to every university student in 140+ countries. No credit card. No trial. No catch.

US students get AI Pro. Everyone else gets AI Plus. Study tools, cloud storage, the works.

This is the exact playbook they ran in 2006 with free Gmail and Docs for students. Microsoft had the better product. Didn’t matter. Students graduated already living inside Google’s ecosystem. Today, Workspace has 3 billion users.

Now they’re doing it with AI.

The 18-year-old starting uni this month is about to form a relationship with artificial intelligence that’ll last decades. Google wants to be in the room when it happens.

OpenAI has the brand. Anthropic has the safety positioning. But neither owns Android, Chrome, Gmail, YouTube, or Google Search.
