There is a particular quality to silence that arrives after a century of sound. Not the silence of an empty room or a paused conversation, but the silence of something that has been there so long you forgot it was there at all. The BBC has ended its Long Wave transmissions. One hundred and one years of continuous broadcast, gone. Not with a farewell concert or a ceremonial countdown, but with the quiet bureaucratic logic of technological progress: the transmitters are old, the audience is shrinking, the money is needed elsewhere.
And yet something has been lost that cannot be measured in audience figures or transmission costs. Something that has to do with identity, with belonging, with the strange psychological power of knowing that millions of other people are hearing exactly the same thing at exactly the same moment as you. Long Wave radio was not just a technology. It was a shared nervous system for a nation, and its ending deserves more than a press release.
Born From the Static
The BBC’s first Long Wave transmission went out in 1925, into a world that was not remotely ready for it. Radio was still a novelty, a box of valves and wire that produced voices from thin air. Most people had never heard a broadcast. The idea that you could sit in your living room in Birmingham and listen to someone speaking from London was, genuinely, a form of magic.
This is the Innovator’s moment, and it maps directly onto what the STAR Operating System calls the Adventurer archetype: the psychological need for autonomy, for new experience, for the frontier. The early radio pioneers were not building an institution. They were building an experiment. Nobody knew what radio was for. News? Music? Drama? Education? All of it, none of it, something else entirely. The Long Wave signal was crude, the sound quality was poor, the programming was sporadic. But it was new, and new was the point.
Self-Determination Theory identifies three fundamental psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Early radio spoke almost entirely to the first. It was the autonomy of access, the freedom to hear the world without leaving your chair. For a population that had just survived a war and was still largely bound by geography, class, and circumstance, that autonomy was revolutionary. You did not need to be educated, or wealthy, or urban. You needed a receiver and a plug socket.
Piaggio did something similar with the Vespa in post-war Italy. They did not sell a lifestyle. They sold freedom. The BBC, in its earliest Long Wave transmissions, did the same. It sold the freedom to hear.
The War Frequency
And then the world broke again.
The Second World War transformed Long Wave radio from a novelty into a lifeline. The BBC’s LW signal was the one that reached across occupied Europe, that pierced the static of jamming stations, that carried Churchill’s voice into kitchens and bedrooms and Anderson shelters when the bombs were falling. The World Service, broadcast on Long Wave frequencies, was not just a source of information. It was a source of identity.
Social Identity Theory tells us that we define ourselves, in part, through the groups we belong to. During the war, the BBC became the in-group. Not a political party, not a class, not a region, but a frequency. If you were listening to the BBC, you were one of us. If you were listening to Lord Haw-Haw on the German frequencies, you were one of them. The act of tuning in was an act of allegiance.
This is not metaphor. This is psychology. The resistance fighters in France, the civilians in occupied Holland, the soldiers in North Africa, they did not just listen to the BBC for information. They listened because listening was an act of identity. It said: I am still part of this. I have not surrendered my belonging.
The pips, the Greenwich Time Signal, broadcast on Long Wave since 1924, became more than a timekeeping device. They were a heartbeat. Six short pips followed by a longer one, marking the top of every hour, a signal that the world was still turning, that the BBC was still transmitting, that something was still functioning in a world that had stopped making sense. The pips were competence in its purest form: reliable, precise, unchanged. When everything else was uncertain, the pips were certain.
Appraisal Theory of Emotion, another of the STAR Operating System’s seven pillars, tells us that our emotional responses are shaped not by events themselves but by how we interpret them. The end of a Long Wave broadcast is, objectively, a technical decision. But the emotion it provokes is not technical. It is the appraisal of loss, the recognition that something which carried meaning has been taken away. The same event, a transmitter being switched off, can feel like progress to one person and like grief to another, depending on what that frequency meant to them.
The Shipping Forecast and the Art of Belonging
If the war made Long Wave radio essential, the peace made it beloved.
There is no better example of this than the Shipping Forecast, broadcast on Long Wave frequencies four times a day, every day, since 1924. Viking, North Utsire, South Utsire, Forties, Cromarty, Forth, Tyne, Dogger, Fisher, German Bight. The names are not just meteorological zones. They are incantations. Poetry disguised as weather data.
The Shipping Forecast has approximately one million regular listeners. Almost none of them go to sea. They listen because the forecast is not really about the weather. It is about the ritual. The same words, in the same order, at the same time, read in the same measured tone. It is a meditation, a secular prayer, a two-minute window in which the world becomes predictable and safe.
This is the Realist’s relationship with Long Wave radio. The Realist is driven by security, by the need for stability and the comfort of the known. The Shipping Forecast is the ultimate Realist artefact: it changes every day in its details but never in its structure. The format is the same. The cadence is the same. The promise is the same. Tomorrow will come, and the forecast will be read, and the sea will be described, and the world will continue.
Cognitive Bias Theory adds another layer. The status quo bias, our preference for things to stay as they are, is precisely what made the Shipping Forecast so powerful. It was not loved despite being repetitive. It was loved because it was repetitive. The repetition was the point. In a world of constant change, the forecast was a fixed point. Its predictability was not boring. It was reassuring.
Test Match Special, also carried on Long Wave, created a different kind of belonging. TMS was not just cricket commentary. It was a community. The regular callers, the conversations between commentators, the famous incidents of rain delays filled with cake reviews and bird-spotting, these were not programming failures. They were the building of relatedness, the third of SDT’s three needs. Listeners did not just follow the cricket. They felt they were part of a group of people who followed the cricket in the same way, with the same mixture of devotion and gentle absurdity.
The TMS community was a tribe in the fullest SIT sense. Membership was self-selected, signalled through shared vocabulary and shared knowledge, and defended with quiet but genuine loyalty. When people say they “grew up listening to TMS with their father,” they are not describing a media consumption habit. They are describing an identity inheritance.
The Slow Displacement
And then, as always happens, the technology moved on.
FM radio offered better sound quality. DAB offered more stations. The internet offered everything, on demand, without a schedule, without a frequency, without the need to be in a particular place at a particular time. The smartphone put more stations in your pocket than Long Wave could carry in a century. Streaming services made appointment listening, the very thing that made LW radio powerful, seem like an inconvenience rather than a gift.
This is the pattern. It is so common in technological history that it barely needs stating, and yet it is worth stating because the pattern itself reveals something about how we relate to the tools we use.
Innovation creates excitement. The Adventurer archetype, driven by novelty and autonomy, embraces the new. Early adopters flock to the technology because it is different, because it is the future, because using it signals something about who they are. Long Wave radio in 1925 was this. The internet in 1995 was this. AI in 2025 is this.
Reliability creates trust. As the technology matures, it moves from the Adventurer’s domain to the Realist’s. It becomes dependable, predictable, safe. People stop noticing it because it works. Long Wave radio spent decades in this phase, the trusted background signal that was always there, like electricity or running water. You did not think about it. You relied on it.
Identity creates attachment. As the technology becomes embedded in daily life, it stops being a tool and starts being a part of who you are. The Shipping Forecast, TMS, the pips, these were not programmes you listened to. They were rituals you participated in. They were markers of identity, of belonging, of the kind of person you were.
And then replacement creates grief. Not for everyone, and not all at once, but for the people for whom the technology carried meaning, its passing is felt as a loss. Not a rational loss, there are better alternatives available, but an emotional one. The loss of a shared experience, a shared frequency, a shared moment in time.
This is the endowment effect operating at cultural scale. We value what we have more than what we could have. The Long Wave signal was not just a transmission. It was ours. And “ours” is the most powerful word in identity.
What We Lose When We Gain Convenience
The argument for ending Long Wave transmissions is sound. The transmitters are expensive to maintain. The audience is ageing. The signal quality is inferior to FM and DAB. The money could be better spent elsewhere. Every one of these points is correct, and every one of them misses the point.
The point is not that Long Wave was the best technology. It was not. The point is that it was a shared technology. A million people listening to the Shipping Forecast at midnight on Long Wave are not just a million people consuming content. They are a million people sharing an experience. At the same moment, on the same frequency, hearing the same words. That simultaneity is what creates belonging. That shared frequency is what creates identity.
Streaming services do not do this. Podcasts do not do this. On-demand content does not do this. They offer choice, which satisfies the Adventurer’s need for autonomy. They offer quality, which satisfies the Thinker’s need for competence. But they do not offer the thing that Long Wave offered, which is the knowledge that right now, at this exact moment, a million other people are hearing exactly what you are hearing. That is relatedness. That is belonging. That is the thing that technology, for all its gifts, has not yet found a way to replace.
The Socialiser, driven by the need for connection and belonging, understands this instinctively. The Socialiser does not want the best version of the programme. They want the shared version. They want to know that the person in the next room, the next town, the next country is listening too. The value is not in the content. The value is in the company.
One Hundred and One Years
There is a temptation, when an old technology ends, to be either sentimental or pragmatic. To mourn the loss or to celebrate the progress. The truth, as ever, is more interesting than either.
Long Wave radio did not end because it failed. It ended because the world moved on, and the world moves on whether we want it to or not. The same will happen to FM. The same will happen to DAB. The same will eventually happen to the internet as we currently understand it, replaced by something we cannot yet imagine that will, in turn, become the thing our children take for granted and our grandchildren mourn.
This is not sad. It is just true. Technologies have lifecycles, just as people do, just as institutions do, just as nations do. The BBC’s Long Wave transmission lasted one hundred and one years. That is not a failure of longevity. That is a triumph of it.
But what deserves honouring is not the technology. It is what the technology carried. The voices in the dark during the war. The pips marking time through a century of hours. The Shipping Forecast read to a million insomniacs who did not need to know the state of the North Sea but needed to hear someone say the words. The cricket commentary that became a family tradition. The shared frequency that became a shared identity.
Long Wave radio was innovative, then reliable, then beloved, then obsolete. That is the arc of almost every technology that matters. And the reason it matters is not the technology itself but the human need it served: the need to belong, to share, to know that you are not alone in the dark.
The transmitter is off. The frequency is silent. But the need has not gone anywhere. It is just waiting, as it always does, for the next thing that makes us feel like we are all listening together.
