The Lancaster shakes in a way that modern aircraft do not. Not turbulence. Not mechanical vibration. Something older, something that comes from eighty years of aluminium remembering what it was built to do. I navigated the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Lancaster B1 and Dakota in 2005 and 2006, and the thing that struck me most was not the romance of it, though there is romance, it is impossible to sit in a Lancaster and not feel the weight of what it represents. The thing that struck me was how defence requirements had changed so completely that the aircraft I was sitting in and the aircraft I normally flew were separated by more than time. They were separated by an entirely different understanding of what defence means.
Today is UK Armed Forces Day. A day to honour serving personnel, veterans, and the families who support them. I served nineteen years in the Royal Air Force, most of them as a Tornado F3 Navigator, responsible for weapons systems, tactical decision-making, and the kind of threat assessment that happens at closing speeds where the margin for error is measured in seconds. I held instructor qualifications across attack instruction, tactics, electronic warfare, and combat survival. I navigated the Tornado F3 Display at airshows across the UK, Europe, North America, Chile, and the Falkland Islands in 2001 and 2002. And in 2006, when the pilot of a Dominie trainer was incapacitated, I landed the aircraft, an experience that earned the RAF Green Endorsement for exceptional airmanship and taught me something about pressure that no simulation could replicate.
I say this not to impress. I say it because the distance between a Lancaster cockpit in 1944 and a Tornado F3 cockpit in 2003 is the distance between two completely different ideas of what it means to defend a country. And the distance between a Tornado F3 cockpit in 2003 and the defence requirements of 2026 is, in its own way, just as vast.
The Lancaster crew flew to Berlin and back knowing that the statistical likelihood of completing a full tour of operations was low. Their defence requirement was mass, endurance, and the willingness to absorb catastrophic loss. The navigator’s job was to get the aircraft to the target and home again, using charts, stopwatches, and the stars. The threat was flak, night fighters, and weather. The margin was survival itself.
The Tornado F3 was built for a different world. Cold War intercepts, Quick Reaction Alerts, the constant readiness to scramble against Soviet bombers testing NATO air defences. The defence requirement was speed, precision, and the ability to make decisions faster than the threat could evolve. My job as navigator was to manage the weapons systems, assess the tactical picture, and ensure that the aircraft was in the right place at the right time with the right solution. The threat was electronic, supersonic, and doctrinal. The margin was measured in seconds.
And now, in 2026, the defence requirement has changed again. The threats are cyber, autonomous, informational, and economic. The battlefield is as likely to be a network as a airspace. The decision cycles are faster, the actors are more diffuse, and the line between conflict and peace is blurrier than at any point in my career. The skills that kept me alive in a Tornado F3, threat assessment, rapid decision-making under pressure, systems thinking, are still relevant. But they are relevant in a different form, applied to problems that did not exist when I wore the uniform.
What the Lancaster taught me, and what Armed Forces Day asks us to remember, is that defence is not a fixed concept. It evolves. It adapts. The men who flew Lancasters to Berlin would not recognise the systems I operated in a Tornado, but they would recognise the purpose. The purpose has not changed. The methods have changed beyond recognition.
I am proud of every aircraft I flew in. The Lancaster, because it connected me to a generation whose courage was so extraordinary that we still build monuments to it eighty years later. The Dakota, because it was the aircraft that carried paratroopers into Normandy and reminded me that defence is not abstract, it is the protection of real people in real places. The Tornado F3, because it was my aircraft, the one I trained in, qualified on, displayed in, and trusted with my life.
But I am also proud of something less tangible. I am proud of the RAF’s capacity to change. To move from propellers to jets, from Cold War to counter-terrorism, from manned to unmanned, from kinetic to cyber, without losing the core thing that makes the Service what it is: the commitment to protect, the willingness to adapt, and the understanding that the threat will always evolve faster than the doctrine.
On Armed Forces Day, we honour the people who serve. We should also honour the principle they serve under: that defence is not a museum piece. It is a living, evolving commitment that changes its form but never changes its purpose. The Lancaster crew knew this. The Tornado crew knew this. The people serving today know this.
And if you ever get the chance to sit in a Lancaster, take it. Feel the shake. Smell the oil. Listen to the engines. And then think about the fact that the country that built that aircraft is still here, still defended, still adapting. That is what Armed Forces Day is about.
